Bee day

I spent most of my morning repairing the bee hives. Some of the hive frames had been damaged when a heifer got overzealous and rubbed the whole hive right over onto it's side. The bees weren't so happy, either. And the cow didn't much enjoy mad bees, and she trampled the frames which didn't make me very happy.

So now it's almost two years later and I'm tired of tripping over all the supplies and it's time to set them up again. Two colonies of bees should be arriving in the mail in a week or so. By fall we should have some honey.

I built up two big hive bodies and now I need to set the foundation wax into the honey frames. The bees will build out their hexagonal cells with wax, and then set up housekeeping making more bees, and honey for feeding the hive. In a couple of weeks, I'll add another frame, doubling the size of their house, and not long after, I'll put on the honey boxes. Then it's just waiting for them to do their thing, and trying to make sure they fill up one box and then the next rather than just going up the middle like they sometimes want to.

I'm looking forward to it. It's another adventure for me. Like winemaking. And beekeeping. And blogging.

Hope your weeks good too. I'm enjoying my vacation and some sightseeing. The online kind.

All for now,
B
